A young governess arrives at a mysterious manor on the remote Moors of England after exchanging many letters with the master of the house. But when the door opens, the only residents are his spinster sisters, a maid (or is it two maids?), and a lovelorn mastiff pining for a far-flung moor-hen. But when there seems to be no child to care for, she’s left to wonder why she has been brought here. The Moors is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and the dangerous results of yearning to be seen for too long. Drawing inspiration from classic Victorian Gothic novels by the Brontë sisters, but twisting the genre to become something weirder and wilder, The Moors is undeniably queer and unmistakably modern.

PRESS QUOTES

“It’s a deliciously feral, fierce, and funny love letter that Riot King brings to life with exquisite theatrical penmanship… Kennedy’s direction creates a delightfully tense and surreal rhythm that dials us into a tone of danger and mistrust.” – Jonnie Lombard, Intermission Magazine

“A riotous new production… Directed with a bold voice and a light touch by Bryn Kennedy, The Moors is a triumph that dashes expectations at every turn.” – Kelly Bedard, My Entertainment World

“Deftly directed… The Moors is an exceptional night out at the theatre.” – Janine Marley, A View from the Box

“The Moors is high-minded low-brow literary profanity as deliciously ridiculous as it is profoundly moving… the six person cast skillfully walks a very thin tonal tightrope, never slipping into silliness or veering too self-serious… expert level work from the whole company.” – Kelly Bedard, My Entertainment World

“It’s sexy and self-aware, entirely campy, yet surprisingly eerie and poignant—a tonal smorgasbord that hits each contrasting note with impressive dexterity.” – Istvan Dugalin, Istvan Reviews

“Directed playfully by Bryn Kennedy, the entire cast expertly embraces the play’s strange, shifting tone.” – Steven Ross, Front Mezz Junkies

“Riot King often punches above its weight in providing intimate, well-crafted theatrical experiences, and director Bryn Kennedy’s version of The Moors is no exception.” – Ilana Lucas, BroadwayWorld

“A hugely entertaining and thought provoking night of theatre.” – Anya Wassenberg, Ludwig van Toronto
